News about the Hoeven Games

The following article appeared on the website for the Coloraodo State University College of Business:

Family invites your interest in Hoeven Tournament

“Dr. Hoeven gave depth to my experience at CSU. I was so impressed with his case studies that I recorded every single lecture on cassette and listened to them in my car. I referred to these tapes as ‘The Portable Hoeven.’ Had he known I passed up punk rock, he would have laughed. I can hear his laugh as I type this letter.” -- Robert R. Johnson ‘81 (MS-finance)

Say the name Professor Jim Hoeven to dozens of alumni, and the reaction is one of respect, admiration and appreciation.

Dr. Hoeven began at Colorado State in 1972, taught until 1995, and died of cancer in 1996. During his tenure, he impacted dozens of students in meaningful ways.

Regrettably, Jim and Evie Hoeven’s son, Jim Jr., “Chip” died in 1985 while a graduate student at the College of Business. At the time, a number of people donated money, and the family started the James Abbott Hoeven Jr. Scholarship for business students. When Professor Hoeven (Jim Sr.) died, the scholarship was renamed to honor both father and son.

Shortly thereafter, the Hoeven family decided to raise more money for the scholarship and organized a tennis and golf tournament for two years,

James "Chip" Hoeven, Jr.

followed by four years focusing on a golf tournament.

Both men were avid golfers. “Jim would be real proud of the scholarship,” said Evie. “And Chip would have loved the tournament. He’d be right in the middle of it.”

This year the family is pulling out all the stops to raise more support for the scholarship fund. “The goal is to draw more interest in the scholarship and make it one of the most preferred, so that students and employers recognize it as an elite award,” said Evie.

Plans are underway for the golf tournament on June 13 at SouthRidge Golf Course in Fort Collins with a 7:30 a.m. start. Mark your calendars and spread the word to family, friends and colleagues. The family is also planning a related evening social including a live band, food and fun. More details regarding the event will be announced soon.

“I think this tournament is in honor of the best professor I ever had. My friends and I would look at the class schedules and try to get Dr. Hoeven as many times as we could. He was a great professor.” -- Bill Dinzole ‘75 (finance & real estate)

Criteria: The $3000 is awarded to a student who has a 3.3 GPA, leadership evidence, and extracurricular activities.

Quote from Ms. White, who was a former recipient of the scholarship:
“In addition to providing public and private accounting services over the past several years, I have enjoyed teaching college accounting as an adjunct/part-time faculty member. Through discussions with Professor Don Samelson, I decided that obtaining a Master’s degree in accounting would be necessary and beneficial to my goal of someday teaching full time. Most recently I was chief financial officer for a commercial construction company and prior to that was the controller for a real estate developer. I believe now is a critical time to teach future accountants the highest level of professional ethics and business integrity in addition to appropriate accounting skills.”
